The ‘Rejected’ American Airacobra That Soviet Aces Used to Shred the Luftwaffe, 1943
In the spring of 1943, in the skies over a river delta in southern Russia, a Soviet pilot pointed the nose of his fighter at a German Messerschmitt and fired a single shell the size of a man’s fist straight through the spinning propeller. The Messerschmitt did not just fall, it came apart in the air.
The pilot’s name was Alexander Pokryshkin. By the end of the war, he would be credited with 59 confirmed kills, second only to one other man in the entire Soviet Air Force. And the plane he flew while he did it was not Russian. It was not German. It was American. Here is the part that almost nobody outside of Russia talks about.
That American fighter, the Bell P-39 Airacobra, had already been thrown away by the people who built it. The United States Army did not want it for the main fight. The British took one look and shipped theirs off. Two of the most powerful air forces on Earth had handled this exact airplane and decided it was not good enough.
The Soviets took the reject and in their hands over the next 2 years, that reject became one of the deadliest fighter platforms of the entire Eastern Front. So, how does a plane fail two air forces and then turn around and produce the highest scoring ace ever to fly an American aircraft? The answer is part physics, part geography, and part raw human skill.
And it starts in a factory in Buffalo, New York. The Bell Aircraft Company built the Airacobra to be different on purpose. Most fighters of the day put the engine up front in the nose, where you would expect it. Bell did not. They dropped the engine into the middle of the plane, right behind the pilot’s seat, and ran a long drive shaft forward under the pilot’s legs to turn the propeller.
Why do something so strange? Because it freed up the nose. And into that empty nose, Bell stuffed a gun. Not a machine gun, a 37 mm cannon, the M4, firing right through the hub of the propeller. Around it sat machine guns. The whole front of the airplane was one heavy punch. Now, that cannon is worth slowing down on because it tells you everything about how this plane wanted to fight.
The M4 fired a shell that weighed well over a pound, and it pushed that shell out at about 2,000 ft per second. One good hit could tear a wing off another fighter or rip open the engine of a bomber. But the gun had quirks. It only fired about three rounds a second, and it carried just 30 shells before it ran dry.
So, this was not a weapon for spraying the sky and hoping. It was a sniper gun bolted into a fighter. You got a handful of shots and each one had to count. A pilot who could put one of those shells where it needed to go did not need a second pass. He needed a second of patience and one clean line. The plane also had tricycle landing gear with a wheel under the nose instead of a tail wheel, which made it easy to land and easy to see over on the ground.
It had a roomy cockpit with car-style doors. It had a good radio. For a pilot, sitting in it felt modern. On paper, it looked like a winner. But airplanes are not flown on paper. They are flown in the air. And in the air, the Airacobra had a problem that nobody could design away. The problem was altitude. Let me explain why that one word decided everything.
An aircraft engine breathes air just like you do. The higher you climb, the thinner that air gets and the less power the engine can make. To fix that, the best fighters of the war used a device called a turbo-supercharger, which jams thin, high altitude air back into the engine, so it keeps making power way up high.
The early Airacobra was supposed to have one. Then the design changed. The turbo-supercharger came out and the plane was left with a simpler single-stage supercharger that worked fine down low, but ran out of breath up high. The Allison engine had what engineers call a critical altitude, the height where it stopped making full power.
On the production Airacobra, that ceiling sat somewhere between roughly 12 and 15,000 ft. Push past about 17,000 ft and the power fell off a cliff. Climb higher than that and the Airacobra turned sluggish like a sprinter trying to run up a mountain with a bag over his head. There was a second problem and this one scared pilots.
Remember that engine sitting in the middle of the plane behind the pilot. That heavy weight in the back shifted the plane’s balance toward the tail. Once a pilot fired off all that cannon ammunition in the nose, the nose got lighter and the balance got worse. The plane became prone to a vicious spin, a flat twisting fall that was hard to recover from.
Some pilots lost their lives learning that lesson. So now picture the war the Western Allies were fighting in 1941 and 42 over Britain and Western Europe. Air combat happened high. Bombers cruised at 20,000 ft and above. Fighters fought up there to protect them or to defeat them. That high thin air was exactly where the Airacobra fell apart.
The British found this out the hard way. The Royal Air Force received their Airacobras and put them into a frontline squadron in September of 1941. The verdict came back fast. The climb was too slow. The performance at altitude was a disappointment, and that spinning habit made test pilots nervous. The British flew a handful of combat missions and then pulled the plane from frontline service almost immediately.
The Americans reached a similar conclusion for the European fight. The plane that was supposed to be a frontline fighter got pushed towards secondary roles. Two air forces, same airplane, same answer. Not good enough for the war we are fighting. And that is where most airplane stories end. The plane that nobody wants gets forgotten.
But the Airacobra story was just getting started because there was a third air force that was fighting a completely different kind of war. Far to the east, the Soviet Union was locked in the largest land conflict in human history against Nazi Germany. And the air war over that front did not look like the air war over Britain.
It was not a high altitude duel between bombers and interceptors. It was a low and grueling brawl fought down where the ground war was happening. Soviet aircraft spent their time supporting troops, attacking armor, strafing columns, and protecting their own ground attack planes. Most of that work happened at low and medium altitude, often below 10,000 ft.
And down there, the Airacobra’s fatal weakness simply did not matter. Think about it. The plane lost its power up where the air thinned out. On the Eastern front, a lot of the fighting never went that high in the first place. Down low, the Airacobra was fast. It was sturdy. It had that brutal nose cannon, and it had a good radio, so pilots could actually coordinate.
The exact plane the British called a disappointment was in the Soviet sky, close to ideal. Therefore, the West’s reject started flowing east, and it flowed in numbers that are honestly hard to believe. When production finally ended, Bell had built 9,558 Cobras. Of those, 4,773 were sent to the Soviet Union. That is roughly half of every Airacobra ever made, handed to a single ally.
The P-39 made up about 1/3 of all the Lend-Lease aircraft the Soviets received. No other country flew so many. Getting them there was its own kind of epic. The planes traveled two main roads to the front and neither one was easy. The first was the route across the top of the world, the one the Soviets called Alsib, short for Alaska to Siberia.
American pilots flew the fighters up to Fairbanks, Alaska. There, Soviet ferry pilots took over for a run of nearly 4,000 miles from Fairbanks all the way to Krasnoyarsk deep in Siberia. They crossed empty tundra and frozen mountains in cold so brutal that metal turned brittle and engines fought to start.
There were almost no places to set down if something went wrong. Along that route there were close to 300 accidents and more than 100 people lost their lives just moving the planes before a single shot was fired in anger. Around 2,600 Airacobras made that crossing. The second road came up from the south. About 2,000 more were packed into crates, shipped to Iran, then assembled, inspected, and flown north over the Persian corridor towards Soviet bases beyond the Caucasus mountains.
Boat, then crate, then wrench, then wing. In fact, one of the most famous units in this whole story, Pokryshkin’s own regiment, was pulled off the line and sent down to Iran early in 1943 to pick up its new Cobras, then flown back to the front in April, right as the biggest fight of its life was beginning. By the time these planes reached the men waiting for them, they had already earned a name.
The pilots did not call it the Airacobra. They called it the Kobrastochka. It is a tender little word, something like dear little cobra. Some used krunshka, little cobra. You do not give a tender nickname to a plane you dislike. You give it to a plane you trust with your life. So the question becomes, what did the Soviets do with it that the British and Americans could not? And the answer has a name: Alexander Ivanovich Pokryshkin.
Pokryshkin was not a born golden boy of the air force. When his flying school was shut down in the early 30s, he came out the other side trained as an aircraft mechanic, not a pilot. He had to fight and claw his way back into a cockpit. He was a man who understood machines from the inside out before he ever flew one. He was stubborn.
He was analytical. And he had a habit that made his superiors deeply uncomfortable. He thought the official Soviet fighter tactics were wrong and he would not keep quiet about it. And his first day of real war nearly ended his story before it started. On the day Germany invaded, in the chaos of that opening morning, Pokryshkin spotted an aircraft, dove on it, and shot it down.
Then he saw the red stars under its wings. He had just destroyed a Soviet bomber, a brand new type, so secret that the fighter pilots had never been told what it looked like. He had to swerve in front of his own comrades to stop them from striking more of their own side. It was a sobering lesson in how confused, how unready the Soviet air arm was in those first hours.
Most men would have buried their head and followed orders. After that, Pokryshkin did the opposite. He started keeping notebooks. After every fight, his and his friends, he wrote down what happened, who attacked from where, who lived, who did not, and why. Slowly, those notebooks became an argument. And the argument was that everything the Red Air Force was teaching about air combat was costing lives.
In the early days of the war, Soviet fighter doctrine was old-fashioned. Pilots flew in tight, slow groups and fought turning duels, circling and circling to get behind an enemy. The Germans had moved past that. They fought fast and high, diving in, firing, and climbing away before anyone could turn on them.
Pokryshkin watched the Germans win with their method and watched his own friends lose their lives with the old one. So, he tore the old rule book apart and wrote his own. He boiled it down to four words that Soviet pilots would repeat for the rest of the war: Height, speed, maneuver, fire. The idea was simple to say and hard to do. Climb higher than your enemy before the fight.
Use that height to build tremendous speed in a dive. Use that speed to set up one clean attacking move, then fire, defeat the target, and zoom back up to do it again. Never get dragged down into a slow turning fight where you become an easy target. He paid a real price for saying it out loud, for pushing tactics his commanders called reckless.
Pokryshkin was grounded. He was reassigned to busy work. At one point they took away his Communist Party card, which in the Soviet Union of that era was close to a sentence of disgrace, and a court martial was actually scheduled. The man who would become the most decorated fighter pilot of his nation nearly ended the war on charges for the crime of being right too early.
And here is why the Airacobra fit Pokryshkin’s method like a glove. It was fast in a dive. It was rugged enough to take the strain. And that 37 mm cannon meant he did not need a long burst to score. One pass, one heavy shell, one victory. Height, speed, maneuver, fire. The plane the West threw away was built almost by accident for exactly the way Pokryshkin wanted to fight.
By early 1943, all of this was about to be tested in one of the fiercest air battles of the entire war. Among those units was Jagdgeschwader 52, the home of some of the highest scoring fighter pilots in history. The Soviets started with around 600 aircraft and rushed in more until they had over 1,100. The fighting opened on the 17th of April 1943 when the German army tried to crush a stubborn Soviet beachhead clinging to the coast and the air above it caught fire.
For the next 7 weeks into the first days of June, the sky over those few square miles of delta became one of the most violent stretches of air in the entire war. The main Soviet air commander of the sector said that on some days he could watch an aircraft fall out of the sky every 10 minutes. On the worst days, as many as 100 separate air battles raged over the same patch of ground.
And it was here over the Kuban that Pokryshkin and his squadron mates in the 16th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment turned theory into success. They flew the Airacobra. They flew it Pokryshkin’s way and they introduced a new formation that became famous as the Kuban ladder. Picture it like a set of shelves stacked in the sky.
Instead of bunching all the fighters at one altitude, Pokryshkin spread them out, one group above the next, each with a clear job and a clear patch of sky. The lowest shelf engaged with the enemy. The shelf above watched for anyone trying to dive in. The top shelf sat in reserve, ready to fall on whoever thought they had found an opening.
If a German pilot dodged the first shelf, he climbed straight into the second. If he slipped past that, the third was waiting. But the ladder was only half of it. Pokryshkin paired it with a patrol pattern his pilots called the pendulum, swinging back and forth across the front, so the fighters were always moving, always carrying speed, never caught sitting still.
And tying the whole thing together was something the Soviets had struggled with for most of the war: Ground control. Radar stations and spotters on the ground talked to the pilots by radio, telling them where the Germans were coming from and steering the shelves into position. This was a different Soviet air force from the confused one Pokryshkin had nearly met his end fighting in on the first day.
The Germans were used to having the height advantage. Suddenly, the Soviets had stolen it, organized it, and wired it into a trap. This was the moment everything flipped. For most of the war up to this point, the Luftwaffe had owned the skies of the Eastern front. Over the Kuban, that ownership cracked. Soviet historians treat this 7-week battle as a turning point, as important to their war as the Battle of Midway was to the Americans.
German accounts admitted it marked the beginning of the collapse of their air arm in the east. The elite units suffered the worst. In Jagdgeschwader 52, the very outfit filled with record-setting aces, roughly a third of the pilots were knocked out of action. By the time the fighting ended, the Germans had lost something like 1,100 aircraft with more than 800 of those shot down in air combat, far more than the Soviets did.
And rising out of the middle of that storm was Pokryshkin himself. His reputation exploded. In a single stretch of 1943, he was named a Hero of the Soviet Union, the country’s highest honor, on the 24th of May. Then again 3 months later on the 24th of August. He would earn it a third time the following year on the 19th of August, 1944, by which point he was no longer just a pilot, but the commander of an entire fighter division, the 9th Guards.
He was the first man in the entire Soviet Union to receive that honor three times. The mechanic who lost his party card had become the most celebrated airman his country ever produced. Other pilots became legends in the same machine. Among them was Grigori Rechkalov, who became the single most successful Airacobra pilot of the war.
Rechkalov scored 56 confirmed personal victories plus six more shared with other pilots. And here is the detail that drives the whole point home: Every single one of those 56 kills was scored in the cockpit of the Airacobra. Not one in a Soviet plane. All of them in the American fighter that two Western air forces had handed back as not good enough.
Now think about what that actually means. The highest scoring Soviet ace, Ivan Kozhedub, topped the list with 62 victories, and he flew Soviet-built fighters. But right behind him sat Pokryshkin at 59, flying an American Airacobra. The most prolific Airacobra pilot of all, Rechkalov, flew the same plane to 56.
The plane that the United States and Britain had decided was not good enough for the front had produced the deadliest pilots their largest ally put into the air. It is worth stopping to be clear about what this story is and is not. This is not a story about American factories winning the air war for the Soviet Union.
The Soviets built their own excellent fighters, the Yakovlevs and the Lavochkins, and they flew them in huge numbers. The Airacobra was one tool among many. What makes the Airacobra special is the irony at the heart of it. The same qualities that made Western pilots reject the plane, its weak, high altitude performance and its tricky handling, simply did not matter in the war the Soviets were fighting.
And the qualities that Western air forces overlooked, its speed down low, its toughness, its punishing cannon, its good radio turned out to be exactly what a pilot like Pokryshkin needed to fight the way he believed was right. The plane did not change. The war around it did, and so did the men flying it.
A machine is only ever as good as the hands that hold it and the place it is asked to fight. Put the Airacobra in the high cold skies over Germany and it was a disappointment. Put it down in the brawling air over the Kuban with a stubborn ex-mechanic who had rewritten the rules of air combat in the cockpit and it was a killer.
By the end of the war, the Soviets had flown the Airacobra in nearly every major battle on their front from the Caucasus to the drive on Berlin. The reject had become a fixture, and the men who flew it did not remember it as a hand-me-down. They remembered it as the Kobrastochka, the dear little cobra that carried them through the worst fighting of their lives and brought most of them home.
So the next time you hear that some weapon was a failure, it is worth asking one more question: A failure for whom and in what fight? Because the Bell P-39 Airacobra answered that question in the most surprising way possible: Rejected in the west, legendary in the east.
